Unit Seven

    Lecture Notes
Music is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) art forms. But how
we interact with music today is actually very different from how
our ancestors interacted with it. Witht the rise of capitalism, music
has become more and more a commodity. Through this lecture we
will try to recapture the cultural practice of music as it functioned
in society prior to the invention of recording devices.

    Readings
Music has served many different purposes down through the
history of humankind. Here is a look at yet one more use (and
we get to meet up with Clifford Geertz again!).

      Agora Discussion
After visiting the Music Appreciation Page , talk about one particular
musical exerience you have had which fits one of the categories of
use that is discussed on this site.

    Writing Assignment
After visiting the  Rainbow Walker Traditional Music Page and
the  Earth Drum Council sites, think about the lecture notes, the
reading, these two sites, and how they might relate. Then comment
on how these texts do or do not reflect your own "use" of music.
Feel free to present alternative views.
