Writing Assignment Seven

First, visit the  Rainbow Walker Traditional Music Page and the  Earth Drum Council sites. Each site offers articles to read which reflect several different uses of music. Choose one to read from each site. (The Rainbow Walker page offers articles on how Native Americans think about and use music. The Earth Drum page concerns "drum circles," an idea which has its roots in many different cultures, including Native American, Indian, African, and Latin American.)

Also visit these two sites to listen to examples of Native American music. The first site,  Side Canyon's tradtional Native American Music selection , has a link to download RealPlayer which you will need to listen to the selections. (If you have never downloaded anything from the Internet, this will be an easy way to get your feet wet.). The second site, Tribal Fires: Contemporary Native American Music , has both traditional and contemporary examples.

Think about the lecture notes, the reading, the two sites above, and the song examples. How might they all  relate? Is there a common theme? Attempt to identify this common theme in your writing. Then comment on how these texts do or do not reflect your own "use" of music (that's a hint).

Feel free to present alternative views.

This piece of writing must be formal--that is, whole sentences, grammatically correct, and punctuated correctly. For more instructions on formal writing, check back to the Syllabus page

(See instructions on submitting written assignments on the Preface to this Course page.)
