For Any Associate In Applied Science Degree
Degree Requirements
For the associate in applied science (A.A.S.) degree, the candidate must complete an approved program of at least 64 semester hours of courses numbering 100 or above, including general education requirements.
General Education Requirements
General Education at SVCC is designed to provide learning experiences that prepare the student to assume a productive role as a citizen, to understand and function successfully in the world, and to prepare for lifelong learning. General education will provide the opportunity for the student to acquire the knowledge, skills, insights and sensitivity needed to function as an educated person.
The general education requirements are designed to produce competence in the following areas:
- Communicating
- Solving Problems
- Understanding Social Institutions
- Using Science and Technology
- Appreciating the Arts
- Quantifying and Computing
- Maintaining Personal Health and Well Being
The specific requirements needed to fulfill the general education component of the A.A.S. degree are outlined as follows:
General Education Course Requirements
- Orientation (1 semester hour)
An orientation course (PSY 100) is required of all students seeking to earn an A.A.S. degree. This course should be taken during the first semester of college work. Part-time students should complete PSY 100 before completing 15 semester hours of course work at SVCC
- Communications (6 semester hours)
ENG 100 or 101 and one of the following:
ENG 111*, SPE 131, ENG 103
- Mathematics (3 semester hours)
MAT 105 or above. See the specific program for recommended mathematics course or sequence
- Humanities (3 semester hours)

Major Field Course Work
Course work in the major field must satisfy the requirements of the specified curriculum in which the student is enrolled. See the appropriate program page of the catalog for the required courses and number of credit hours that must be completed.
Constitution Requirement
All students must satisfy the state requirements regarding national, state and local government, the United States Constitution and the Illinois Constitution in one of the following methods:
- present evidence on a high school transcript that the Constitution examination requirements was satisfactorily completed in an Illinois high school,
- successfully pass the constitution examination administered by the SVCC Counseling Office,
- successfully complete one of the following SVCC courses: GOV 163 or 164, or
- submit a copy of a GED showing "Constitution passed" if taken in Illinois
Suggested Computer Course Electives
Students planning to enter virtually every field need to be knowledgeable of the operation and applications of computers. Suggested elective courses for this purpose are listed below: OAS 101- Keyboarding and Document Processing -- Basic
