Sauk Valley Community College
Early Childhood Education Program
INTRODUCTION
Congratulations for choosing the rewarding career as an Early Childhood Educator. With this degree will you have the opportunity to help shape the lives of young children. You have also made a decision that will provide direction and meaning to your life.
The mission of the Early Childhood Education program pledges a strong commitment to our students by providing quality education and learning opportunities that encourage personal and professional growth.
With this mission in mind, The Early Childhood core courses will provide you with history, theories, concepts and real life application as a professional educator. During the last two semesters of you education you will complete two practicum experiences, working in the field for fifteen hours each week. The practicum will give you the opportunity to combine your “book learning” with “hands on” experience working on the job. It is during the practicum that the concepts, principles and theories come to life. Some of the most meaningful learning occurs as a result of having to deal with the frustrations and unexpected events during the practicum. As a result, students come to a better understanding of their strengths, limitations and the influence of their personal values, attitudes and prior life experiences on their career choice. You will be prepared to enter the work force with knowledge, experience and dedication.
This booklet has been prepared by practicum students to help guide your course of study. They have provided you with information they found helpful as students in the program. Please read the information with the understanding that some of the information may be subject to change. Feel free to contact me if you have further questions.
