Award-winning playwright and actress Jessica Lynn Johnson will bring her internationally-touring one-woman show Oblivious to Everyone to Sauk Valley Community College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 27, in the Mathis Theatre. There is no charge to attend and the public is invited.
Oblivious to Everyone explores the media’s influence on American society and centers around Carrie, an L.A. bombshell who has developed multiple personalities due to her unhealthy obsession with pop-culture. Flipping identities like TV stations, the audience will discover just how oblivious Carrie really is. Johnson also portrays a variety of characters of different age, sex, and race to examine influential stereotypes, prejudices, and pressures prevalent in American media.
Oblivious to Everyone enjoyed an extended off-Broadway run at New York City’s prestigious Theatre Row, was seen in New York City’s Fringe Festival, New York City’s Samuel French Playwright Festival, the Kansas City Fringe Festival, and the L.A. Women’s Theatre Festival. In addition, Johnson was named Best National Solo Artist at Williams College. Internationally, Johnson performed her show at the Monodrama Thespis Festival in Germany, and the Black Magic Women’s Theatre Festival in Amsterdam.
In addition to her off-Broadway success, Johnson has also appeared on television including roles in One Life to Live and Forensic Files, in film, in voice-over work for several national commercials, and has hosted the Internet show GirlsGuidetoDating.com.
