SVCC Holds Disability Awareness Program Oct. 19 to Recognize Disability Awareness Month

In recognition of Disability Awareness Month, Sauk Valley Community College will sponsor the first annual disability awareness program on Wednesday, October 19th from 12:00-1:30 p.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. in the SVCC East Mall.

Interactive stations will be setup throughout the Mall for participants to experience daily barriers that individuals with a disability may face. By visiting all stations, participants will be entered into a raffle for prizes as well.

The program will also have a panel featured by the Illinois Department of Human Services Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) and Northwestern Illinois Center for Independent Living (NICIL) that will begin at 1:30 p.m. in room 1K4. The panel will discuss barriers in employment, school, and daily life.

Participants will also have a chance to meet with community organizations such as DRS, NICIL, and the Whiteside County Health Department as well as campus organizations throughout the event to learn more on disabilities and find out ways to get involved raising awareness.

This is a free event for SVCC students and the public to raise awareness on disabilities. For more information, contact Ana Salgado, student activities coordinator, at 815-835-6432.
