Related Services

The Counseling Office also provides related services and resources such as helpful courses, the college placement program, and related testing to assist students.

Courses

PSY 100 - Orientation:

This graded course is offered for one credit hour in the Fall, Spring and Summer semesters. Counselor approval may be required to register.

The orientation course (PSY 100) is required of all students seeking a degree at SVCC. It is designed to help students make the transition into college and enhance their academic success.

It is advised that all students take this course in their first semester. Examples of course topics include:

  • Expectations/responsibilities of the college student
  • Academic Planning
  • College resources, services, and opportunities for involvement
  • Academic Counseling and Planning
  • Goal Setting and student success skills

PSY 100 is offered in a variety of formats. These formats are designed to meet the needs of different students. All formats involve 16 classroom hours.

Condensed:
This format begins and ends before the beginning of the semester.
Advantage: A jump start on the semester.
Extended:
This format meets for the several weeks of the fall or spring semester.
Advantage: More time to focus on academic issues.
Special Focus:
This format is designed to target special topics/majors or special populations.
Advantage: Meet other students with similar interests or backgrounds.
Alternative Delivery:
This independent study format utilizes the Internet.
Advantage: Allows for flexible scheduling: good option for students with college experience.

The majority of PSY 100 classes are taught by SVCC counselors or academic advisors and are a great opportunity to get to know a counselor or academic advisor and establish a relationship that can be helpful throughout your stay at Sauk.

CSS 110 - Human Services Seminar: Career Decision Making

This 8 week one credit hour course focuses on learning the process of career planning. Students will acquire information about self-concept, interests, abilities, values and experiences as well as information about the World of Work. Based on this information, students will draft educational and occupational goals.

Placement

Sauk Valley Community College is committed to providing students with the greatest chance of sucess in initial and future coursework. Thererefore, SVCC has adlopted a placement policy to ensure that students enroll in courses that most accurately reflect their current skills and abilities in English usage, reading and mathematics.

All degree and certificate seeking students must fulfill one of the placement options. These options include the SVCC placement test, ACT scores, and/or review of transfer credit.

Placement test scores are good for three years. SVCC counselors or academic advisors meet individually with students to explain and interpret placement test results. To schedule an appointment, contact the counseling office at (815) 288-5511 ext 208.

The SVCC Placement test is offered on a weekly basis in a group setting. Individual SVCC Placement times are also available. To sign up for the placement test, contact the Counseling Office at (815) 288-5511 ext. 208.

Special Placement Accommodations?

Any students with special needs may request an alternative testing situation. More information is available at the Student Needs Office.

Please note: Specific documentation will be required in order to provide special testing accommodations.

GED Testing

The high school equivalency examination program (GED) is administered at SVCC and makes it possible for men and women who left school without completing their studies and to earn the equivalent of a high school diploma. You must apply to take the GED test by contacting the Regional Superintendent for your county and by paying a $50.00 application fee.
