2011 IRS Data Retrieval - Instructions:
Please note that it takes up to two weeks for the IRS income information to be available for electronic IRS tax return
filers, and up to eight weeks for paper IRS tax return filers. We encourage students to give a minimum of 4 weeks
(for electronic filers) or 12 weeks (for paper filers) before requesting a paper IRS Tax Return Transcript, unless otherwise
ineligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool.
*Students and/or Parents who completed a 2011 Amended Tax Form 1040X are ineligible to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool and must contact our office for instructions.
- Log into the Student's FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov
- Choose the option Make Corrections
- Using the Next and Previous buttons, navigate through the FAFSA, validating information as you do.
When you reach the information regarding tax data (for student and/or parent), be sure that the
2011 Tax Return Status is marked "Already Completed" - Review the questions regarding eligibility to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool - If you are not eligible
please follow the instructions below to request a 2011 IRS Tax Transcript. - Click on the LINK TO IRS button
- Click OK on the page warning that you are leaving the FAFSA (Don't worry, it will bring you right back here)
- Enter the data from your 2011 taxes - Please note you must use the address listed on your 2011 Taxes - If you
are unable to access the data with the IRS Data Retrieval Tool please contact our office for further instructions. - Click Submit
- Review the information and mark the first box - Transfer my tax information to the FAFSA - and click Transfer Now
- *Important* Do Not change any data that is transferred from the IRS - This will invalidate the data transfer and will delay the processing of your file.
- Be sure to complete or update any boxes that do not show Transferred from the IRS - Including updating your
working wages (use your W2s for this information) - Sign and Submit the correction to your FAFSA - We will receive a new Student Aid Report showing the transferred data.
2011 IRS Tax Return Transcript and W-2 Transcript- Instructions:
*Please note using this method will severely delay the processing of your FAFSA*
If you are unwilling or unable to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool you must provide our office with a copy of your IRS Tax
transcript.
If you are requesting a 2011 IRS Tax Transcript and reside at the same address as the one filed on your taxes:
- Request a copy of your 2011 Tax Return Transcript (Not Account Transcript!) at http://www.irs.gov/individuals/article/0,,id=232168,00.html?portlet=105. Please note that you must use the Primary taxpayers information to request the transcript if married filing jointly.
- The IRS will mail you a copy of your 2011 Tax Return Transcript.
- Provide this copy to the Office of Financial Assistance at Sauk Valley Community College.
If you have moved or are otherwise unable to request your 2011 IRS Tax Return Transcript online, or if you are requesting a 2011 W-2 Transcript:
- Complete form 4506-T Request for Transcript of Tax Return – The form is available on our website or at http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f4506t.pdf. Be sure to complete the form and request Return Transcript (mark box 6a) and/or W-2 Transcript (mark box 8). We highly recommend that you request both, to expedite the process should we need any further documentation.
- Mail or fax the form to the IRS
- The IRS will mail you a copy of the requested documentation
- Provide this copy to the Office of Financial Assistance at Sauk Valley Community College.
