Instead of studying the ins and outs of music, we will be looking at the medium through which most of us consume our music--that is, sound recording.
Music is one of the oldest (if not the oldest) art forms. But how we interact with music today is actually very different from how our ancestors interacted with it. Witht the rise of capitalism, music has become more and more a commodity. Through this lecture we will try to recapture the cultural practice of music as it functioned in society prior to the invention of recording devices.
After visiting the sites, think about the lecture notes, the reading, these sites, and how they might relate. Then comment on how these texts do or do not reflect your own "use" of music. Give examples of when you may have used music to create community, communicate with others, or make a political statement, if applicable.
