Writing Assignment Two
After reading the lecture material, choose two paintings (from the WebMuseum ) that come from two different eras (other than the Renaissance or the Baroque). That means you will choose 2 paintings total, one from each era. They do not need to be eras which follow one another such as Classical and Romantic. For example, you may compare a Modern era painting with one from the Middle Ages.
Next, decide which qualities from each of the four pairs of Wolfflin's method (linearly/ painterly, closed/open, planar/recessional, unity/multiplicity) apply to each painting. That is, you will choose four elements for each painting, one from each Wolfflin pair. Describe, in detail, what it is about each painting that made you decide which qualities to assign to it. (When you are done, each painting will have four qualities attached to it.)
As with the first assignment, be sure to include the title of each painting and who painted it.
This piece of writing must be formal--that is, whole sentences, grammatically correct, and punctuated correctly. For more instructions on formal writing, check back to the Syllabus page.
