Nursing 121 - CNA Recertification

What does recertification mean?

An individual who successfully becomes recertified will have their name and credentials placed back on the Health Care Work Registry and will be eligible to work as a Certified Nursing Assistant in the State of Illinois. The Sauk Valley Community College program has Basic Nursing Assistant Training Program (BNATP) approved instructors teaching the recertification using Manual Skills Competency Testing.

Is recertification for you?

If you once were a nurse aide, but have not worked for pay for 24 consecutive months or longer since your last competency exam, the recertification process is for you.  To become recertified, a nurse aide must previously have been deemed competent as a certified nurse aide either by evaluation (grandfathered in;  military trained; nursing student; foreign LPN/RN; inactive; out of state CNA) or by completing an Illinois Approved Nurse Aide Training Program.  The recertification process allows individuals to take steps to regain approved certification by following a step-by-step process provided by the Illinois Department of Public Health.

How do you get started?

Appropriate candidates for recertification must:

1. Access the Nurse Aide Testing website, www.nurseaidetesting.com, and fill out  the on-line recertification form through the link in the “popular links” box. Call the phone number listed at the end of the form to complete the process.
2. Receive an e-mail from SIU with a letter explaining the process, the Performance Skills booklet and an instruction sheet on how to use the online registration program

Once you have received the information from SIU you may register for the recertification course - NRS 121 - through Sauk Valley Community College's Health Professions Office. Email Katy Keller at katy.j.keller@svcc.edu  to begin the registration process.
