Social Service: Human Services - Associate in Applied Science (089)

(089) Associate in Applied Science

The social service curriculum is designed for students interested in obtaining employment in the broad field of human services. The social service program provides a comprehensive course of study, including human relations, group process, social problems, social work theory, policies, and skill development. Second year students will have an opportunity to apply and expand their knowledge through two supervised, on-the-job, practicum experiences.

Work and Employment

The employment outlook for the trained human services worker is favorable. The social service program prepares students for careers as paraprofessionals in a variety of settings. This degree will train students for employment as technicians in mental health and specialized social service agencies, residential treatment and shelter care facilities, hospitals, nursing homes, and senior and adult day care centers.

Employers will expect graduates to demonstrate skills in documentation, interviewing, assessment, service plan development, cultural awareness, counseling, case management, and resource networking. Employment would be at entry or middle level positions.

Special Considerations

Transfer programs in social work may lead to higher salaries and diverse job opportunities. Some human services courses will transfer to four-year bachelor's programs, but this program is NOT intended for students interested in transferring to a four-year college.
