2008-09 Team Outlook (10-2-2008)
Looking to build on their 20 win 2007-08 season the Skyhawk's have signed seven players that will have an impact on the success of the Skyhawks in '08-09. At the guard position the Skyhawks have signed three local players to strengthen what should be a very good guard group led by returning starters Kwan Waller and D.J. Williams. The first guard to sign was All-Area guard Rian Nailor of traditional power Rock Falls High School. A strong left hander, Rian has the ability to finish at the rim or score from the perimeter. Next to committ was a second All-Area guard Jamison Wiersema from Milledgeville High School. Jamison averaged 11.5 ppg and 5 .5 rebounds for the Missiles during his senior season. The third guard to committ is also from Rock Falls High School, but not on this years Rocket team. A 2003 Rock Falls graduate Robbie Minor had an outstanding athletic career for the Rockets. Robbie is sixth on the all-time career scoring list and was named 2nd team All-State by the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association. Robbie was also an outstanding baseball player and accepted a Division I scholarship to play baseball at Evansville University. With his college baseball career over, Robbie will return to the basketball court for the Skyhawks in 2008-09. It should be exciting to watch. At the forward /center position the Skyhawks have signed four players to offset the loss of Sophomore starters Philip Peugh, Ben Rayhorn and Josh Weber who will continue their careers at the 4-year level next season. First to sign for the Skyhawks was Rockford Boylan High School All-Nic 10 selection and MVP of the Rising Stars All-Star game, Stephon Valentine. Stephon averaged 11 ppg and 7 rebounds for the Titans his senior year and should contribute immediately at the forward position with his combination strength and speed. Another player that should contribute immediately is center/forward D'Angelo Stewart from Elgin High School. D'Angelo and Stephon are already familiar with each other having met in the AA Sectionals this past year. D'Angelo has the ability to score inside and give the Skyhawks the inside outside scoring balance they need to challenge the best teams in Region IV. Two other forwards will provide the athletic ability and speed the Skyhawks need to go up tempo on offense and pressure on defense in '08-09. A former teammate of returning guard DJ Williams at Guilford, Milton Jones signs with the Skyhawks to continue the recruiting success Sauk Valley has had in Rockford the last two years in both men's and women's basketball. The second forward/center is JaMario Dunlap from Milwaukee South High School. At 6'4" don't under estimate JaMario's ability to play inside. With the ability to finish at the rim, strong post moves, and good jumping ability JaMario has the ability to play both the four and five positions. With one more possible forward signing still to come, the Skyhawks have the potential to build on last years 20 win season and get a championship in '08-09.
