2-21-2009 - Kankakee

L 86-90

The Skyhawks last regular season match was a home game vs. Region IV rival Kankakee. It was a special night for the Skyhawks as they honored their sophomore players and their parents. Eight sophomores were playing their last regular season game at the Sauk Valley gymnasium. The game itself was a battle against the second ranked team in the region. With sophomore wing D.J. Williams getting the Skyhawks off to a great start offensively, the Skyhawks jumped out to a double digit lead halfway through the first half. At the half the Skyhawks led by five 42-37. The second half saw the Skyhawks get off to a slow star and give the lead to Kankakee. Sauk Valley's shots would not fall as Kankakee built up a 15 point lead with 7 minutes to go. The Skyhawks started their run on the defensive end as they raised the intensity and started to force Kankakee into quick shots and mistakes. The Skyhawks closed to within two with 12 seconds remaining, but full court pressure could not force the turnover and Sauk had to foul with 6 seconds remaining. Hoping for one last shot, the Skyhawks did not get the opportunity as both free throws were made and the Skyhawks fell by four 86-90.

Leading the way for the Skyhawks was sophomore wing D.J. Williams with 29 points on 11 of 15 shooting and 5 of 9 from 3 point range. Also in double figures for the Skyhawks were their other two, two year starters; Kwan Waller with 22 points and Rico Combs with 16 points and a team high 8 rebounds. The Skyhawks finish the regular season 20-10 overall and will open playoffs on Saturday February 28th.
