This year's Skyhawk golf team is blessed with depth and strength. The team's core is built around four All-Conference sophomores and five-to-six other players that could score equally well.
Team captains Richard Nelson, John Staranko, and Josh Eggleston finished in the top three last spring and improved their averages. Last year at the Duane Chanay Invitation, Eggleston tied for second in an outstanding field that included highly-ranked St. Ambrose. He had a productive summer, is healthier this year, and shows new confidence. Nelson's hard work last fall really paid off. He was one of the five individual Region IV qualifiers, took All-Conference honors, and represented Sauk in the NJCAA Championships. Staranko, who was All-Conference and Skyhawk Team Medalist last spring, became more consistent in mid-fall and medaled at the Prairie View Invitational.
Also returning are sophomores Caleb Hess, Andrew Whitmarsh, and Shane Stuart also return. Hess, an All-Conference golfer, finished a mere stroke behind Staranko last spring. Whitmarsh tied for fourth among 17 teams at last fall's Highland "36". An Academic All-Conference golfer, he brought the example he sets in the classroom to the course. Joel Kipping's hard work also paid off. And, Mitchell Johnston, Alex Bantrup, and Joe Presley all had successes last season and have excellent collegiate potential.
Joining the second team is freshman Matt Davis, second-year student Alex Hesser, Brett Revening, Ryan Koesler, and Jay Lammers.
The Skyhawks compete at all major events during the fall and spring. The season progresses briskly each Friday with a new invitational in a variety of divisions.
