Skyhawks Receive All-sport Award (10-2-2008)

Sauk Valley Community College’s Skyhawk athletic program has been awarded the 2007-08 Arrowhead Conference All-Sports Award for outstanding performance in conference competition.Russ Damhoff, athletic director and men’s basketball coach, said this is the first time that Sauk has ever won the award, and more interestingly, Sauk is the first school in the Arrowhead Conference to win the All-Sports award without winning a conference championship.Damhoff explained that the Arrowhead Conference has six conference sports that include golf, volleyball, women’s basketball, men’s basketball, baseball, and women’s softball. The six finishing positions are totaled to find the school with the top overall finish average. SVCC President Dr. George Mihel said the college community and Sauk Valley area can be very proud of this award.“This all-sports award is one of many examples of the quality, high-caliber athletic program that we have here at Sauk,” said Dr. Mihel. Damhoff, who received the award from Gary Huber, NJCAA Region IV director, said that Sauk’s conference performance for 2007-08 was at 73 percent, a new Arrowhead Conference high mark. Four Skyhawk teams finished second place, and two teams finished third in conference competition.Skyhawk coaches include Damhoff, men’s basketball; Jolene Leseman, volleyball and women’s basketball; David Williams, golf; Sara Kipping, women’s tennis and men’s tennis; Mark Pruis, women’s softball; and Rene Valdez, baseball; and Mike Sullivan, cross-country.
