The Skyhawks men's tennis team is ready to hit the 2010 spring season with new faces and plenty of potential.
Leading the Skyhawks will be returning sophomores Shawn Wike of Sterling, who played number two singles and placed third at last year's NJCAA Regionals, and Jeff Spitzer, also of Sterling. Coach Sara Kipping said that as Wilke and Spitzer, having both competed in last year's NJCAA regional tournament as freshmen, know the level of competition and the work it takes to win.
New faces on this season's roster include freshmen Luke Stover, Evan Knack, Dilan Dempsey, Ralph Gosch, and Blake Cullen, all from Dixon. Rounding out the team are Gabe Gloria of Sterling, and John Loggins of Rochelle, who was a state qualifier.
Kipping said this team will have their work cut out for them against strong competition from other Region IV teams. However, she said she is confident in the team's potential going into this season.
"This team has the potential to be very good. All these guys have a great love for the game and the knowledge of how to play the game," says Kipping. "They will need to practice hard and work on perfecting their game. Our goal is to be one of the top three teams at the regionals and qualify for the nationals."
The Skyhawks begin their season on the road against Oakton Community College on March 30th in Des Plaines. Sauk's eight-match season includes three home contests against Waubonsee on April 5, Rock Valley on April 6, and Illinois Valley on April 12. Regional play is set for the end of April.
