2009-10 Women's Tennis Team Outlook
This year's tennis team will be the biggest that Coach Sara Kipping has ever had. A young team, there will only one returning sophomore with eight freshmen. "It will be great to have depth on the team and a returning leader," said Kipping.
The lone sophomore is Katie Overby of Rochelle. She competed in the NJCAA National Tournament in May and knows the caliber of competition to expect. She is a talented player and will help lead the freshmen.
The new freshmen include Alex Mahan, Dixon; Alyssa Delong, Dixon; and Korissa Dreissens, Rock Falls. Dreissens was part of the Newman team that placed third at the first-ever IHSCA Team Tournament in June 2008. Meghan Schulz, Rachel Pashon, and Mallory Sisson, all from Sterling, played for Sterling in the 2009 IHSCA Second Team Tournament, earning fourth place. Kelly Wilcox and Tess Ginn, both from Dixon, were part of the Dixon High School team that were two-year conference champions.
"All these ladies have the talent and the competitive instinct to help them compete at the collegiate level," says Kipping. "Most of these players are used to competing against each other on the court now they will be playing with each other."
Kipping added that to have a successful season the Skyhawks will need to build team chemistry and a positive attitude. The team goal is to place among the top three teams at the NJCAA Regional Tournament in October.
