(i.e. academic researchers, private companies, and not-for-profits)

When should a researcher request approval for the project?

All researchers are required to submit a completed Human Subject Research Request Form to the Dean of Institutional Research and Planning, at least 30 days prior to conducting the research, even if the research falls into an exempt category.

If a project is initiated prior to receiving approval, the researcher will be required to cease the research activities immediately. There are no exceptions.

Procedures for requesting approval

  1. Contact the Dean of Institutional Research and Planning to discuss the research project and to request the Human Subject Research Request Form. The Dean will provide the form.
  2. Electronically submit the completed form to the Dean of Institutional Research and Planning at least 30 days prior to the start of the research project. Signatures are not required at this time.
  3. The Dean of Institutional Research and Planning will review the request and may take any of the following actions:
    1. Approve the research;
    2. Request clarifications, revisions, or additional information;
    3. Deny the research project;
    4. Convene the full Institutional Review Board (IRB) as needed.
  4. The Dean of Institutional Research and Planning will inform the researcher in writing or by email of all decisions regarding the proposed research project.
  5. If the research project is approved, the researcher will submit a signed, printed copy of the request form within a week of being informed of the approval, and prior to initiating the research.
