Sauk’s AmeriCorps to Present ‘Family Movie Night’ at Historic Dixon Theater

Sauk Valley Community College's AmeriCorps program will host Family Movie Night with the award winning film Shrek, on Saturday, May 16, at the Historic Dixon Theater, 114 S. Galena Ave. in Dixon.

Admission is $3 per person or $2 per person if a canned good is brought for donation to the AmeriCorps' Food/Troop Drive to benefit area food pantries and the Sterling-Rock Falls Armory.

The event is the highlight of a week-long series of community service events completed by the 61 members from Sauk's AmeriCorps program as part of National Service Week. AmeriCorps members  have also visited local nursing homes to deliver Mother's Day cards and flowers, helped the American Red Cross at Dixon High School, sponsored a plant sale at Kreider Center in Dixon; planted flowers at Kreider Center Group Homes, presented a program on AmeriCorps at Sterling Christian School, met with area high school students on AmeriCorps opportunities, led an Adopt-A-Highway cleanup along Illinois route 2 in front of SVCC, and planted flowers at Dillon School in Sterling.

ABC AmeriCorps, a national service program sponsored by SVCC, serves Lee, Whiteside, Carroll, Ogle, DeKalb, Bureau, LaSalle, Livingston, Henry, and Rock Island Counties. ABC AmeriCorps members work with children, youth and families in education programs and community-based agencies to increase academic and life skills. They also participate in environmental, public safety, homeland security, and other human service needs projects.
