Sauk Valley Community College will offer students SexSignals, a unique presentation that looks at dating, sex, and consent, at 7 p.m. on Monday January 25, in the Mathis Theater. There is no charge to attend.
The subject of rape is controversial and awkward to discuss. Although most young adults are aware of the subject, it is critical they are given the opportunity to freely discuss topics like dating, sex, and rape.
Produced by Catharsis Productions, SexSignals incorporates improvisational comedy and audience interaction to provide a provocative look on these subjects. The play explores how social pressures and false preconceptions about the other sex contribute to tensions found in dating, and how these factors lead to sexual assault. Audiences will re-evaluate a culture holding victims of rape responsible rather than the rapists. SexSignals challenges audiences to re-examine misleading acts of seductions. SexSignals encourages safer, healthier interpersonal sexual relationships while providing bystanders with positive suggestions on how intervene if they witness someone in a situation potential of sexual violence.
Catharsis Productions produces educational programs that use theatrical techniques to convey important social messages. The play’s performers are experienced in sexual assault prevention education and rape crisis counseling.
