Sauk Valley Community College’s newest student group is sponsoring a fun event for a serious cause.
Sauk’s Campus women’s Organization (CWO) will sponsor “Walk a Mile in Her Shoes,” from 4:30 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, April 21, at Sauk. Participants will walk on the college’s second floor with games, food, fun and guest speakers on the first floor. Proceeds will benefit the YWCA of the Sauk Valley with a portion going toward scholarships for Sauk students.
During this event, male volunteers get pledges from supporters and actually walk a mile in women’s high-heeled shoes. A variety of women’s shoes in different sizes will be provided for men to wear. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is an opportunity for men to educate the community about and rally to prevent sexualized violence, according to the website walkamileinhershoes.org.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes helps men better understand and appreciate women’s experiences, thus changing perspectives, helps improve gender relationships and decreases the potential for violence. It also shows the community that recovery services are available and shows that men are willing and able to be courageous partners with women to make the world safer.
Sauk’s CWO is looking to put as many men in heels as possible for this cause. Those interested in participating in the walk should call Sauk at 815/288-5511, ext. 346. For those that would rather not walk, but would like to contribute, both monetary and non-monetary donations will be accepted, and those wishing to volunteer their time are encouraged to join.
Walk a Mile in Her Shoes: The International Men's March to Stop Rape, Sexual Assault and Gender Violence began in 2001. The march started out small and has grown each year since, with larger crowds attending each year with events held in multiple locations benefiting multiple rape crisis centers. Walk a Mile in Her Shoes is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) corporation that is part of Venture Humanity, Inc., that develops peace, violence prevention and community projects.
