New Grade of 'C' Requirement for All Coursework in Program
All directed general education, professional education and content-area coursework that forms part of an application for teacher certification, endorsement, or approval must have been passed with a grade no lower than "C" or equivalent in order to be counted towards fulfillment of the applicable requirements effective for students completing student teaching Spring 2012 or later.
Changes in the Required State Testing for Teacher Certification
As a reminder, students must take and pass the state basic skills test administered through the ILLINOIS CERTIFICATION TESTING SYSTEM (ICTS) BEFORE ENROLLING in any teacher education program in Illinois.
Cut Scores Needed to Pass
Scores needed to pass the “new enhanced basic skills test” will be increasing as of September, 2010 making this test more rigorous and geared at a college sophomore level. Minimum Allowable Scores Effective September 2010 are:
- Reading Comprehension 79 percent
- Language Arts 79 percent
- Mathematics 75 percent
Beginning January 2010, no individual may attempt to pass the same ICTS test more than five times including basic skills. Any previous test attempts for the same test made prior to January 12, 2010, do not count toward the five-time limit.
Ability to Bank Scores for the Illinois Test of Basic Skills
Students can retake only the portions of the basic skills test (subtests) as needed. However, each test date counts as one of the five total attempts allowed.
Plan and Prep for the Illinois Test of Basic Skills. Required Background Check
For education courses that require classroom observation (EDU 101, 276, 277, 278), students must have an acceptable background check on file. Students will be contacted about fulfilling this requirement prior to the start of these classes.
