Sauk Valley Community College’s Theater Department will hold auditions for Kurt Vonnegut’s The Euphio Question at 3 p.m. on Wednesday, September 8, and at noon on Thursday, September 9, in the Mathis Theatre.
Ten energetic actors (age 18 and older) plus reliable stage managers/technical assistants are sought for this upcoming production. The auditions are open to everyone; however, special consideration will be given to Sauk theatre majors. No prepared material is required for non-theater majors. Sauk theater majors should have a one-to-two minute audition monologue prepared. Those interested in assisting with the technical aspects of the show should attend one of the auditions, but will not be expected to read.
Written in 1950, The Euphio Question involves a scientist who discovers how to channel cosmic energy from space via a radio antenna that emits waves of pure bliss, an exploitative radio host who tries to capitalize on the device, a heroic local professor, and more.
Sauk’s theater department performed The Euphio Question last year in a stripped-down performance festival version. Jason Hedrick, Sauk’s director of theater, said that this year’s production will be a full stage version and his own stage adaptation in honor of the late science fiction author and satirist Kurt Vonnegut. Hedrick said because Vonnegut’s works are still read in high schools, he would like to present special performances for local high school students that include question-and-answer sessions afterward.
Performance dates for The Euphio Question will include the Petit Jean Performance Festival, from Wednesday, October 20 through Sunday, October 24 at Petit Jean State Park in Morrilton, Arkansas. This renowned performance festival is attended by college theater majors and artists from all over the U.S.
Performance dates at Sauk will be Thursday, November 18 through Sunday, November 21.
