Sauk Valley Community College student Sophia Aponte of Sterling was recently awarded the YWCA of the Sauk Valley's Racial Justice Scholarship for the 2010-11 academic year. This $500 scholarship was awarded through the Sauk Valley College Foundation.
A dental hygiene major, Aponte carries a 3.18 grade point average (GPA). She is a member of the College’s women’s softball team and Student Support Services program. She plans to graduate from Sauk with an Associate in Applied Science in 2011 and attend a four-year institution. Her career goals include working in the dental field. A 2009 graduate of Sterling High School, Sophia is the daughter of Noel Aponte of Elmhurst and Olivia Aponte of Sterling.
The YWCA of the Sauk Valley's Racial Justice Scholarship is awarded to a second-year female minority student enrolled in an associate degree program at Sauk. The YWCA is one of 80 private donors that provide scholarships to deserving Sauk students.
The Sauk Valley College Foundation is a non-profit corporation that helps to broaden the educational opportunities and services that SVCC provides for its students. Each year the Foundation distributes scholarships that total more than $160,000.
