Sauk Valley Community College student Husni Ashiku of Polo is the recipient of the Jerry Weston Mathis Memorial Scholarship for 2010-11. This $500 award was distributed through the Sauk Valley College Foundation.
Ashiku, an art major, recently graduated from Sauk through its dual credit program with Northern Illinois University. He will now major in design and communication at NIU. Active in Sauk’s Theater Department, Ashiku was a two-time winner in the College’s annual Film Review Contest. He also played the role of Cinesias in Sauk’s spring 2010 production of Lysistrada, performed in the Four Films production at the 2010 Petit Jean Performance Festival, and worked with the Sauk’s Work in the Real World program. Ashiku would like to pursue a career with a professional design firm.
A 2007 graduate of Polo Community High School, Husni is the son of Imer and Fatime Ashiku of Kevicvo, Macedonia.
The Jerry Weston Mathis Memorial Scholarship is named for Dr. Jerry Weston Mathis, Sauk’s first theater director. It is one of 80 private donor scholarships that provide monetary awards to deserving Sauk students each year. Selection for this scholarship is based on financial need and other criteria. These scholarships play a crucial role in helping students pursue their educational goals.
The Sauk Valley College Foundation is a non-profit corporation that broadens the educational opportunities and services that SVCC provides for its students. Each year the Foundation funds numerous scholarships for Sauk students that total more than $160,000.
