VITAL’s Staff Met with Secretary of State while at Adult Education Conference
Members of Sauk’s adult literacy program, Project VITAL, Zully Vock and Lana Coomes met with Secretary of State Jesse White, at the 32nd Annual Statewide Conference of Illinois Adult and Continuing Educators Association (IACEA) in Springfield from March 9th_ 11th. Together with members of IACEA, Zully and Lana were granted a private session with Secretary White where concerns about adult education and the future of literacy were discussed. Zully and Lana were able to thank Secretary White for his unconditional support to adult education and literacy programs such as VITAL. Due to statewide cuts on educational budgets, most programs offering adult educational services such as tutoring, GED, ABE (Adult Basic Education) and ESL (English as Second Language) have struggled to keep providing the necessary services to hundreds of adult students; however, Sauk Valley Community College has always done a remarkable job of providing adult educational services to all area residents even in difficult economic times. Proof of Sauk’s advocacy for literacy is demonstrated by support of adult education programs such as GED, ABE, ESL and tutoring services. At conferences, such as IACEA, educators, students and social services representatives have the opportunity to share and acquire the necessary knowledge to enhance local adult educational programs such as Project VITAL.
