Sauk Valley student Shellie Higley proved that hard work and dedication make a difference as she received the Jesse White and Illinois Press Association Spotlight on Achievement Award for 2011.
Higley was one of eleven adult students in the state honored at the Illinois State Library in Springfield for the outstanding achievement in improving literacy skills. The award included a $200 check from the Illinois Press Association Foundation and a plaque as well as a personalized Illinois Blue Book from Secretary White. Most importantly, Higley earned personal success and admiration as a student thanks to the unconditional support of her Project VITAL tutor Teresa Wells.
Higley and Wells have been working together through Sauk’s Project VITAL program for the last seven years. During these years Higley reached her goal of reading smoothly, clearly and with excellent comprehension. She is able to help others with questions and concerns in her family and life because of her persistence and determination. In the future she hopes to open a tutoring site for children.
Sauk’s Project VITAL continues to help students like Higley by providing free tutoring services to adults in the Sauk Valley area.
