Sauk Valley Community College with ABC AmeriCorps will host a 9/11 10th anniversary tribute event entitled Where Were You? Friday, September 9 at SVCC from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Where Were You? invites the community to remember, honor and learn. Participants can take part in presentations given by Ground Zero respondents on their experience at the site or learn about disaster relief from American Red Cross. Where Were You? will also be a chance to view a portion of a beam collected from the Twin Towers. Memorabilia and video exhibits will be on display throughout the area as well.
“This is a time to remember not only where we were on this day but how we felt and how it has affected ourselves, our families, and our communities,” said Amy Viering, director of foundations and grants. “Having the Twin Tower beam to observe, commemorating our local first responders and having this experience on campus makes for an amazing tribute.”
In the morning, SVCC will also recognize local firefighters, police officers and first responders with a breakfast. Many will also participate at Where Were You?, making this an opportunity for the community to commemorate them as well.
As participants visit campus for the 9/11 tribute, they will also be able to donate to create a permanent placement for the Twin Tower beam. This location has not been established but will be within the Sauk Valley community.
