The Sauk Valley Community College Music Department will present its fall concert October 23 at 2 p.m. in SVCC East Mall. The SVCC Concert Band, SVCC Concert Choir and the SVCC New Music Ensemble will perform a variety of music for the public to enjoy for free.
The afternoon will have three songs performed by the band under the direction of Mark Bressler including “Variations on a Korean Folk Song” by John Barnes Chance, “Finale” from Symphony #1 by Alexander Borodin/arr. Frank Erickson and “Broadway One Step” by Karl L King/arr. John Paynter.
The choir will be performing lighter contemporary songs under the direction of Kris Murray such as ”Never Never Land” from Peter Pan by Betty Comden, Adolph Green, and Jule Styne and “The Music of the Night” from Phantom of the Opera by A. L. Weber. The choir will also perform more traditional choral music such as “Oliver Cromwell” by John Powell.
The concert will also feature two of this year's Dorothy Engel Music Scholarship recipients, Colin Adams and Kevin Bielema, who will be performing with the SVCC New Music Ensemble. The Dorothy Engel Music Scholarship recognizes full-time students with outstanding talent and experience in the field of music and encourages them to pursue the development of their talents through continued study in music at Sauk Valley Community College. Students such as Adams and Bielema are then able to showcase their talent at events such as the fall concert.
