Sauk Valley Community College encourages the public to think outside the box about the career fields available today. The public is invited to the Nontraditional Occupational Showcase Thursday, April 26 from 5-8 p.m. in the east mall at SVCC.
Nontraditional occupations are ones that the majority of those employed are of the opposite gender. Examples for women include computer information systems, electronics, criminal justice, welding, truck driving, wind energy and fire science. Men’s nontraditional occupations include nursing, office and administrative services, early childhood education, special education and human services. All the occupations mentioned are programs also available at SVCC.
During the nontraditional occupational showcase from 5-6:30 p.m., participants will have a chance to meet with organizations that include nontraditional careers, professionals in nontraditional fields and employment agencies to discuss opportunities, education and financing.
At 6:30 p.m. a panel discussion will take place in room 1K4. The panel will include professionals in the nontraditional careers and SVCC students studying in nontraditional programs. Participants will be able to ask questions and learn more throughout the discussion.
This free event is open to all ages as it is never too early or late to consider the kinds of careers available. Refreshments will also be provided. For more information on the showcase, contact SVCC Instructional Services at 815-835-6406.
