The Sauk Valley Community College Music Department’s Concert Band will be presenting “Not An Ordinary Band Concert” at the Historic Dixon Theatre on February 17, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. Admission is free to the public and freewill donations may be made to the theatre for renovation and maintenance efforts.
The concert is a break from convention for the SVCC Concert Band. Instead of marches, overtures, fanfares, and symphonies the band will instead break from this traditional realm and perform in smaller individual ensembles. The ensembles range in size from two players to as large as 15 performers. Patrons will hear flute, clarinet, saxophone, brass, and percussion choirs of like instruments paired with smaller quartets (4), quintets (5), and duets (2). The musical selection will encompass all of music history from serious classical to pop and jazz. This concert really has something for everyone.
“Not an Ordinary Band Concert” is considered a Chamber Music Concert and the idea for the concert came from SVCC Clarinet Professor Emily Bressler. Mrs. Bressler in collaboration with Flute Professor Denise Deter, Band Director Mark Bressler, and community member Cathy James brought this idea to reality.
Some of the selections to be performed include:
- Pachelbel’s “Canon”-Flute Choir
- Gabrieli’s “Canzona Noni Toni”-Brass Choir
- Mozart’s “Marriage of Figaro Overture”-Clarinet Choir
- Fillmore’s “Lassus Saxes”-Saxophone Choir
- Joplin’s “The Entertainer”-Percussion Choir
