Soar and Explore Nontraditional Careers at SVCC

Many people overlooks certain careers, thinking it is not for them because it is a “man’s job” or a “woman’s job.” On March 21, Sauk Valley Community College wants the community to look beyond job stereotypes and consider opportunities in nontraditional careers. The College will host Soar and Explore: A Look at Nontraditional Careers on Thursday, March 21 from 6-7p.m. in SVCC’s east mall.

This free event will allow participants to meet with professionals in nontraditional fields to discuss skills and education needed. Nontraditional careers include women in welding, criminal justice, technology, fire science and men in nursing, administrative services, early childhood education and human services.  Businesses will also be discussing job opportunities available. Program coordinators will give tours throughout the event of SVCC’s campus including the newly renovated welding, HVAC, and manufacturing areas, science labs, and radiologic technology labs. This is a chance for anyone looking at new careers to meet with area business and professionals.

Following the program, everyone is invited to a special presentation at 7 p.m. by former FBI agent Candice DeLong. DeLong will share her experiences as a woman on the front lines for the FBI which included going undercover as a gangster’s moll, posing as a madam for a call-girl ring, carrying out the manhunt for the Unabomber and more.
