Are you ready to get fired up?! As Sauk Valley Community College continues to spread awareness about its fire science degree and certificate programs, it will once again give the public an opportunity to visit the campus on Thursday, May 23 from 5-8p.m. for the free Fire Science Open House.
SVCC invites current and past firefighters, those interested in fire science, families and the community. This is a chance to learn about the state-of-the-art program as well as the growing EMS program. SVCC counselors will also be available during the event to talk to students about registering for fire science and EMS courses and how to begin the process.
“There are few fire science programs in our area,” stated Janet Lynch, dean of health professions. We hope that this program will meet the needs of the community. We have tremendous support from our fire departments and are excited to have firefighters instructing many of our courses.”
Several other activities will take place during the open house including an auto extrication demo, helicopter and fire truck displays, fire truck rides, building tours and more. There will also be a demonstration of the state-of-the-art flashover simulator that the SVCC fire science program uses in courses and training. This is one of only three flashover simulators in the Northern Illinois area and the only one owned by a public institution.
Refreshments will be served during the open house. For more information about the open house or the fire science program at SVCC, contact Jeff Bryant Sr., fire science program coordinator, at 815-994-6184.
