SVCC Totally Tobacco Free

SVCC is Tobacco-Free Campus

On April 27, 2015, the SVCC Board of Trustees voted to revise the College’s current smoking policy, 514.02 Smoking Policy, to create a 100% smoke-free and tobacco-free campus. This policy is in accordance with the Illinois Smoke-Free Campus Act, effective July 1, 2015.

The Smoke-Free Campus Act prohibits smoking on each campus of a State-supported institution of higher education. The revised policy states: “Smoking” is defined as (1) lighting or burning any type of matter or substance that contains tobacco, including but not limited to cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, water pipes, or other smoking devices (2) lighting or burning of non-tobacco plants or marijuana; and (3) using electronic cigarettes. The policy also includes smokeless tobacco.
In an extra step to help protect the health of its students, staff and visitors, the policy prohibits smoking or tobacco use anywhere on campus, indoors or outdoors, including in personal vehicles parked on SVCC property.

This means all smoking or tobacco products must be extinguished or put away upon entrance to SVCC property.

In a continuing effort to help individuals quit smoking, the College will refer interested staff and students to the CGH Medical Center Lung Cancer Prevention Program. This program includes monthly smoking cessation classes. Students may refer to the SVCC Student Code of Conduct for penalties associated with violating the policy.
