Helping Others While Helping Yourself

Do you want to give back to your community? Do you enjoy working with people, especially children and youth? Do you need money for college or to repay a student loan? If you answered “yes” to these questions, then ABC AmeriCorps may be for you.

ABC AmeriCorps is a federally funded national service program sponsored by Sauk Valley Community College and serves Lee, Whiteside, Carroll, Ogle, Bureau, LaSalle, Livingston, Henry and Rock Island counties in central and northwest Illinois. The mission of ABC AmeriCorps is to work with children, youth and families throughout the community through educational programs and community-based agencies to increase academic and life skills.

The national AmeriCorps program was started in 1993 and has engaged more than two million Americans of all ages and backgrounds in service each year. Since 1994 more than 500,000 men and women have served. The program is somewhat like the international PeaceCorps and is sometimes called “The Domestic PeaceCorps” because members serve in their local communities.

As an AmeriCorps Member, you will receive a wealth of benefits. Perhaps the biggest benefit you will experience when you join AmeriCorps is the satisfaction of incorporating service into your life and making a difference in your community and your country. But there are many other benefits too. Members receive a living stipend while gaining valuable work experience and training. Upon completion of the program, members also receive an education award. For serving 25 hours per week, you would receive a $6,260 stipend and $2,675 education award; serving 12 hours per week earns a $3,130 stipend and a $1,415 education award; and serving 8 hours per week earns a $1,087 stipend and a $1,182 education award. These terms of services have a very positive impact on the community and the members involved.

Last semester, 63 members served in 28 sites throughout the community offering tutoring and mentoring in math, English, and reading. Want to get involved? The ABC AmeriCorps Program at Sauk Valley Community College is now taking membership applications for the fall and spring semesters. For more information, please visit www.svcc.edu/americorps.
