In compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and the Americans with Disabilities Act, support services are provided by the Disability Support Office to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to the educational opportunities offered at Sauk Valley Community College (SVCC). SVCC employs a Coordinator of Disability Support to determine reasonable and appropriate accommodations for access.
All students are encouraged to contact the Disability Support Office (DSO) early in their academic planning. Eligibility and registration for services through the DSO is a separate process and is independent from registration of classes. All new students requesting services must meet with the Coordinator. This appointment will last approximately one hour. No accommodations will be provided without an intake consultation with the Coordinator.
The intent of the intake and registration process is to ensure access to those with legitimate needs and not to exclude any student from access. All requests for services are determined on a case-by-case basis. IEP's and 504 documents alone may not be acceptable documentation and must be accompanied by supporting documentation. SVCC is not bound by an IEP, SOP or 504 plans from another institution or organization. Services determined by the DSO may be significantly different than those received in high school. The DSO utilizes a collaborative approach to determine accommodations from the students self-report of functional impact and documentation from professional sources as outlined.
Self-advocacy is an important component of successfully progressing through college. It is the student's responsibility to register with the DSO and request services each term. Once accommodations have been determined; it is the student's responsibility to notify their professors of their intent to utilize them.
