Purpose / Notes:
To be an advocate of education and provide positive leadership and educational information, coordinate and deliver state and local services, seeks to improve services, and more to make sure the educational environment is at its best. To serve all segments of the education community, which includes the region's students, teachers, administrators, school board members, non-certified personnel, parents and non-parents, and others in matters related to the public and non-public schools of the county. Offices hours are from 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday through Thursday, and 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM on Fridays. Superintendent services include responding to daily requests for information regarding school law, rules, regulations and procedures, issue and register teaching certificates, receive and distribute state/federal funds to schools, provide initial driving and refresher courses for bus drivers, publish and distribute the Whiteside County Schools Directory, issue monthly newsletter during the school year, process applications and issue diplomas for the General Education Development (GED) tests, provide age verification for social security purposes, hold an annual spelling bee for Whiteside County, and annually inspect school buildings for compliance with the Health-Life Safety code. The fiscal duties also involve examining funds, school district reports, and overseeing other treasury and financial related approvals. Programs over which the superintendent supervises includes the Whiteside County Truants' Alternative Program, Whiteside County Early Childhood Parenting Project, Whiteside County Family Literacy Partnership Program, Whiteside County Prevention Initiative Program, Whiteside County Safe Schools Program, Whiteside County Early Learning Partners Prekindergarten At-risk Program, and the Education Outreach Program.
