Multi-Craft Maintenance Lead


Assistant Director of Facilities






Full-time Support




Perform a variety of activities relative to repair and maintenance of College plant and equipment; assume lead responsibility for mechanical systems repairs and projects. Assist with general maintenance of facilities as assigned.


  1. Directs the daily work schedule, duties, and operations of the facilities multi-craft section in relation to maintaining the mechanical and electrical aspects of the physical plant and critical building systems.
  2. Receives and prioritizes mechanical and electrical work orders assigned by the Assistant Director of Facilities.
  3. Adhere to the College safety program and ensure compliance of the personal protective equipment (PPE) program of all multi-craft personnel.  Review and provide input for the yearly updating of safety plans.
  4. Train new multi-craft personnel on plan operations, procedures, and safety.
  5. Perform repairs on pumps, valves, motors, controls, steam regulators, boilers, chillers, cooling towers, exhaust fans, and the like; prepare for yearly inspection and certification of the boilers, as well as draining of the chiller system; calibrate all controls for heating and air conditioning.
  6. Perform repairs and installation of electrical system components, such as light fixtures, outlets, circuit breakers, switches, conduit, wiring, data cable, and the like.
  7. Operate and repair the emergency power backup generator system. Perform periodic test runs.
  8. Operate and maintain the sewage treatment plant, domestic water supply, emergency waterpower supply, and fire protection system. Maintain logs and submit environmental reports as required.
  9. Maintain current non-community water operator certification.
  10. Prepare and conduct chemical/acid tests for cooling/air conditioning systems.
  11. Maintain inventory of chemicals used and repair part lists for chiller system, boiler, water, and sewage equipment to ensure proper maintenance is accomplished.
  12. Operate the computerized building automation system (BAS) for environmental control.
  13. Participate as needed in the planning, implementation, and construction of building projects to include demolition, remodeling, painting, carpentry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, welding, and the like.
  14. Perform required preventative maintenance checks and services on the physical plant, related machinery, and equipment. Submit documentation and advise supervisor of needed changes.
  15. Performs duties as a member of the Hazardous Waste Response Team to include containment, cleanup, disposal, and report writing of hazardous waste spills.
  16. Reset main breaker in switchgear room as needed, while adhering to safety protocols by wearing full body ARC flash protection.
  17. Operate forklift, aerial lifts, and snow removal equipment as needed or assigned.
  18. Assume all other reasonable professional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor.


  1. Must understand and support the mission of the community college.
  2. Must be able to communicate by email and telephone on a daily basis.
  3. Must be able to provide and understand verbal/visual orders from supervisor and to other staff as required.
  4. Must be able to lift heavy equipment, pumps and motors weighing 75 lbs., and be able to carry small items weighing 50 lbs.; and push and pull carts loaded with pump/boiler equipment weighing 600 lbs.
  5. Must be able to use, demonstrate and train maintenance personnel on use of equipment and procedures.
  6. Must be able to climb and balance oneself on a ladder, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl into tight places as required.
  7. Must be able to work in a team environment.


Confer with faculty and staff on departmental services and work requests. Confer with vendors and contractors who supply boiler, pump, air conditioning equipment and chemicals.


Functional supervision over multi-craft section, work studies, and interns.


High school diploma or GED required. Degree in related field preferred. Five years of experience in HVAC systems, electrical, and plumbing repair required; boiler and chiller operation and maintenance, welding, machine shop, and fabrication preferred. Basic knowledge of general maintenance work required. Must have a valid drivers license. Two years supervisory experience preferred. Must obtain water operator certification within 6 months of employment. Must obtain forklift and aerial boom license within 90 days of employment.




Coordinates the College Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position. This includes, but is not limited to, monitoring conditions, events and circumstances present through daily College operations, and communicating observations to the appropriate supervisor or taking necessary actions to correct, prevent or limit safety problems. May serve as a member of a committee that supports the health, safety and/or legal rights of visitors, students and staff. Such committees may include the AA/EEO, Sexual Harassment, and Safety/Loss Control committees. (Risk Management Categories I, III, IV. See Tort file.)
