TRIO Student Support Services
What is TRIO?
The goal of TRIO SSS at SVCC is to increase student retention and graduation rates of program participants, and facilitate the process of transitioning from one level of higher education to the next. TRIO SSS is federally funded and sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education.
To be eligible for TRIO students must meet one of the following criteria:
- First generation college student (meaning neither parent has a Bachelor's degree)
- Lower income family (determined by FAFSA eligibility)
- Student who has a documented disability

TRIO Resources
Tutoring/Academic
TRIO Tutoring
Trio students have the opportunity to receive peer tutoring from fellow Trio members. We offer assistance in a variety of subjects. Tutoring sessions are weekly 1 hour sessions. For more information please click the button below.
Drop-In Tutoring
Our tutors offer drop-in tutoring throughout the week. Students can join virtually and ask our tutors for academic assistance. The schedule and google meet link for drop-in session can be found by clicking the button below.
Online Tutoring Programs
Trio provides some online tutoring options through sites like TutorMe. These resources are available 24 hours a day and can be accessed through canvas or by clicking the button below.
Become a Tutor
To be a tutor a student must be a member of TRIO, have a cumulative GPA ≤ 3.0, and have received at least a “B” in the course to be tutored. If you are interested in becoming a tutor please see your academic advisor.

Workshops are a staple within the TRIO Department. Workshops create a space for a fun, dynamic, and collaborative learning environment. Additionally, we listen to our students' needs to ensure that we cover topics that are relevant, engaging, and valuable to their personal and academic growth. Financial
TRIO assists with financial literacy so students can pay for their education. Tools and guides are provided to help students make informed financial choices to successfully complete college.

Every year TRIO provides over $15,000 in grant aid scholarships exclusively to TRIO
participants.

Timeline for Transfer
First Year
Use the 1st Year Exploration Transfer Checklist (.pdf) to keep on track!
SEMESTER 1
- Apply for FAFSA (Oct. 1)
- Meet with Advisor to map out AA, AS, AES, or AFA course plan
- Research application requirements of prospective transfer schools
- Set a graduation date goal
- Explore Majors
- Get involved on campus
SEMESTER 2
- Apply for at least two scholarships
- Meet with your Advisor to discuss transfer school options
- Select major
- Earn community service hours for scholarships
- Mark transfer application deadlines on your calendar
- Visit college campuses
Second Year
Use the 2nd Year Commitment Checklist (.pdf) to keep on track!
SEMESTER 3
- Apply for more scholarships
- Choose at least three transfer schools to apply to for transfer
- Start working on your resume
- Continue updating your academic plan
- Check progress towards graduation goal
- Attend college open houses
- Secure housing at transfer school
SEMESTER 4
- Submit intent to graduate
- Register for orientation if required
- Submit official transcripts
- Meet with financial aid to discuss financial aid award letters
- Submit necessary documentation to transfer school
- Order your cap and gown for commencement
- Enjoy this new journey and making new friends!

What can impact your transfer timeline?
- Delaying or changing your major

- Knowing what your transfer tuition and expenses will be early can help you budget
- Maintaining a 3.0+ GPA can help with merit-based scholarships
- Start filing for scholarships early!
- Remember to file FAFSA as soon as possible every year (October 1st)

TRIO students have the opportunity to borrow textbooks for their classes. We try to offer as many books as we can each semester. Unfortunately we cannot provide books for everyone or every course. They are rented by semester on a first come, first serve basis. For more information and to see what books are available please click the button below.

We are located on the western side of campus just around the corner from the western mall entrance. Our offices are 1D07-1D11. Feel free to stop by the desk with questions, to schedule an appointment, or just to say “Hello”!
- Meet with your TRIO advisor at least three times per semester for: Career exploration, Transfer advisement, Financial Aid advisement, and personal advisement.
- Consult with your TRIO advisor prior to registration, schedule changes, and to review mid-term evaluations.
- Attend the TRIO Conference and complete at least Two Workshops per semester, one of which must be a Financial Literacy workshop.
- Consult with your TRIO advisor if you are experiencing problems with school, home, or work, that affect you academic performance.
- Attend all scheduled appointments and respond to phone calls and correspondence. If you are unable to attend your appointment, please con-tact the TRIO office and reschedule your missed appointment.
- Regular class attendance, completion of assignments, and utilization of the Learning Assistance Center (LAC).
TRIO SSS at Sauk Valley Community College, is dedicated to assisting with forward educational progress and degree or certificate completion of students who are first generation, limited income eligible, and or have a document disability. TRIO SSS is a federally funded program by the Department of Education that offers its services free of charge. TRIO SSS provides opportunities for academic development, assists students with basic college requirements, and provides services to motivate students towards the successful completion of their post-secondary education. TRIO SSS assists students in navigating higher education, building college and life success skills, and building a network of resources to assist them throughout their time in higher education and while transitioning into the workforce.
- Persistence Rate: 60% of all participants served in the reporting year by the SSS project will persist from one academic year to the beginning of the next academic year, or earn an associate's degree or certificate at the grantee institution, and/or transfer from a two-year to a four-year institution by the Fall term of the next academic year.
- Good Academic Standing Rate: 91% of all enrolled participants served will meet the performance level required to stay in good academic stand-ing at the grantee institution.
- At least 41% of the new participants served each year will graduate from the grantee institution with an associate's degree or certificate within four (4) years. A minimum of 35% of the new participants served each year will receive an associate's degree or certificate from the grantee institution and transfer to a four-year institution within four (4) years.
- Identify, select and enroll 200 eligible Program participants. 100% of SSS participants will have an Individualized Educational Plan.
- 100% of the participants will be offered individualized financial assistance and advising. SVCC and SSSP staff will foster an institutional climate sup-portive of TRIO-eligible students.
