Purpose:
Nationwide,the American Council of the Blind strives to increase the independence, security, equality of opportunity and to improve quality of life for all blind and visually impaired people.
Remarks:
The hours of operation are 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Eastern time, Monday through Friday. ACB is a tax-exempt, non-profit organization that works in coalition with other disability groups worldwide to create a range of effective programs for people who are blind or visually impaired. ACB staff members provide information and referrals, resources, legislative and governmental monitoring, legislative seminars, public awareness and education, and legal advice and assistance. Other services include an online job bank, college scholarships (must be legally blind in both eyes), an Internet radio station(ACB Radio),and publications. ACB also has a monthly radio program called ACB Reports and a number of electronic listservs. ACB helps individuals with a variety of issue, including civil rights, Social Security benefits, rehabilitation services, guide dog access, pedestrian safety, expanded public transportation, travel and recreation, adaptive technology, braille literacy, and more.
