Mental Health Counseling is a journey of self-exploration. Many people pursue counseling because they recognize that life is not as enjoyable as they wish it would be. College is frequently a time in which diagnoses such as anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, eating disorders, addictions, and other diagnosed mental health disorders become more prevalent.

The counseling relationship between a client and a licensed therapist provides a safe environment to explore the mental health challenge and its implications. Together, the client and the therapist carefully search thoughts, feelings, and beliefs which negatively influence the client’s experience. Established goals are unique to the individual client and may include improved communication, crisis coping, enhanced self-esteem or other behavioral changes. Mental health is actually not an end-goal; it is a life-long pursuit toward "becoming."

The Counselor’s Role
The licensed therapists at Sauk commits to the highest ethical standards of conduct consistent with the Code of Ethics ascribed by their professional organizations (e.g. American Counseling Association, National Association of Social Workers, American Psychological Association). The therapist commits to maintaining a positive, non-judgmental stance, advocating for positive choices and productive changes. Therapeutic interventions, based on research-based best-practices, are utilized to foster optimal growth.
The Client’s Role
The client must be willing to explore the behaviors, feelings, and thoughts which bind intrapersonal growth. Connecting with deeply-held beliefs can be fearful; therefore, the growing client must commit to trust the therapeutic process, understanding that time and effort must be invested to bring about the desired changes in the process of self-discovery. Self-growth can be uncomfortable at times, but the outcomes generally are worth the challenges. Honesty is at the heart of a productive counseling relationship. A client should expect growth to occur in proportion to the honesty presented. Withholding pertinent information is linked to a number of physical and psychological issues. Lack of honesty in the professional therapeutic relationship can significantly delay the progress sought.
